Experience the world`s two biggest Mammals within 5 minutes of each other!!!! (Whale & Elephant). The biggest mammal on land is the African Elephant & the biggest mammal of the water the Blue Humpback Whale. Whale watching in St. Lucia is possible from earlyJune to middle of November. The majority of sightings in Kwa-Zulu Natal are of Humpback whales (in the warm Indian Ocean), which tend to be more spectacular and lively than the Southern Right Whales (found in the cold Atlantic). Of all the whale watching concessions along the entire Southern African coast St. Lucia recorded the highest boat based sightings in the whole country!! (May -December 2000/2001/2002) In fact the closest (2nd position) of recorded sightings occurred also in Kwa-Zulu Natal on the South Coast. St. Lucia official records show 796 sightings as opposed to 2nd placed Shelley Beach (K.Z.N. South coast) of only 145. To quote further from the K.Z.N. Wildlife conservator Mr. Rob Broker :- "This was very interesting because the general impression is that the Cape is by far the premier whale watching destination in South Africa. This is true if you`re watching off the beach in Hermanus, but if you look at the boat-based experience, these records show that these K.Z.N. operators had far more sightings" It is no wonder that St. Lucia is South Africa`s first World Heritage Site! (Source:- Official newsletter of the Kwa-Zulu-Natal Tourism Authority) Statistics show that since 2000, St. Lucia recorded more boat based sightings than the whole of the South African coastline including Cape Town. |
